Why Offer UW in the High School Courses?
UWHS courses offer a rewarding experience for teachers, students, and schools.
Benefit to Students: Students earn valuable knowledge and university credits while in an age-appropriate environment that is familiar to them. Their final grade does not depend on one high-stakes test, but is rather earned over time. Students who have completed a UWHS course say they are better prepared for college-level work and that their study skills have improved as a result of taking the course.
Benefit to Teachers: Teachers will have guest lecturer status at the UW, giving them access to UW libraries and professional support for the duration of the course. Working with a UW department-appointed liaison, teachers learn to use the UW curriculum, activities, syllabus, text, tests, and grading scales with their high school students. The opportunity to teach advanced courses such as Fluency in Information Technology and Second-Year Japanese offers teachers a satisfying challenge that allows them to develop new instructional materials, set higher standards for working with students, and help students learn better study habits in preparation for college-level work.
Benefit to Schools: Participating schools have found that implementing the UWHS program has led to stronger curriculum for juniors and seniors. And, because students remain on the high school campus, schools do not lose FTE funds.
National Accreditation:
UW in the High School is fully accredited by the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP). Accreditation by the NACEP ensures the program's academic excellence and quality.
